Attention metrics vs viewability

Viewability confirms an ad could be seen. Attention metrics measure whether people actually engaged with it. For brand outcomes, attention time and interaction are stronger proxies than a viewable impression alone.

What viewability measures

Industry viewability standards typically ask whether a minimum share of the ad creative was on screen for a short duration. That answers a binary question: was the slot eligible to be seen?

It does not say whether the reader looked at the brand, understood the message, or took any action. A viewable display ad can still be ignored while the user scrolls past.

What attention metrics add

Attention metrics track time and quality of exposure: how long the format stayed in focus, whether the user interacted, and whether they completed the experience. Those signals sit closer to brand recall and message delivery than a viewable flag.

On Collective Audience conversational formats, average attention is about 34 seconds per format across campaigns on the network. Engagement time, interactions, and completion rates sit alongside brand-lift studies when teams need outcome proof. Explore live examples in the Gallery.

When to use each

Use viewability as a floor for media quality and fraud controls. Use attention and engagement when the goal is brand impact, message delivery, or performance that depends on interaction.

Conversational and high-attention formats are designed to earn that time rather than only occupy a viewable slot. See Conversational ads vs standard display.
